STANDARD Continuous Use Oxygen System

Medicare coverage guidelines:  Covered if prescribed by physician AND patient has a chronic respiratory diagnosis AND patient meets Arterial Blood Gas documentation criteria.

Medicare travel oxygen policy

v     Ideal for patient who is mainly homebound or ambulation is limited

v     Oxygen concentrator never requires refilling

v     Compressed gas system serves as portable and delivers oxygen in case of power failure

v     “E” system refills readily available for travel outside Metro-Med service area

TANDEM Oxygen System

Patient receives an oxygen concentrator for use while at home, with liquid oxygen base and stroller used for portability.  While Medicare does cover oxygen, they do not reimburse any additional amount for the extra (and considerable) cost of these systems.  Metro-Med may choose to provide these systems as a courtesy to those patients for whom they would be appropriate and/or a special request is received from their physician.

 Conserving (demand) Oxygen Systems

While Medicare does cover oxygen, they do not reimburse any additional amount for the extra (and considerable) cost of these systems.  Metro-Med may choose to provide these systems as a courtesy to those patients for whom they would be appropriate and/or a special request is received from their physician.  Many insurance carriers consider these systems a luxury, and as such they do not often cover them.
